Elijah-
Powerful prophet who ministered to Israel during the divided kingdom. Elijah was taken to heaven by God. Elijah is not to be confused with his successor, Elisha.
Elisha-
Prophet who was the successor to Elijah. Elisha worked more recorded miracles than anyone in the Bible other than Jesus.
Elizabeth-
Wife of Zacharias the priest. Mother of John the Baptist.
Emmaus-
Small village located approximately seven miles from Jerusalem. The exact location is unknown. After the resurrection, Jesus appeared to two of his disciples on the road to Emmaus.
Ephesians-
Book in the New Testament. One of Paul's letters.
Ephesus-
Capital of the Roman Province of Asia. Ephesus was located on the west coast of Asia Minor. Paul established a church at Ephius and addressed a letter to the congregation.
Epistles-
Formal letters that teach Christian doctrine. The term epistle is used interchangeably with letter. Of the books of the new testament, 21 of the 27 are epistles or letters.
Esau-
Son of Isaac, twin brother of Jacob. Father of the Edomite nation.
Essenes-
Jewish religion sect during the Intertestamental period. Essenes are not mentioned in the Bible.
Esther-
Jewish maiden durin the exile who became a Persian Queen. She remained faithful to God and saved the Jewish people. Book in the Old Testament.
Estienne, Robert-
or Stephanus. Paris printer credited with printing the first Bible divided by both chapters and verses.
Etiology-
A story which explains why something is "the way it is" when there is no explanation.
Euphrates River-
Largest river in western Asia, located in ancient Mesopotamia.
Eve-
The first woman. Wife of Adam.
